The Scientist at Wicker Park

My sister raved about this scene in the movie Wicker Park where Matthew (Josh Hartnett) finally found Lisa (Diane Kruger) after a long period full of deceit, misunderstandings, and frustrating fate. It was the scene where the gorgeous actor stares at the back of his beloved with an anguished, I-finally-found-you look... the scene where the girl looks behind her, sensing him amidst the crowd... the scene where Coldplay’s “The Scientist” was played as background music.

I HAD TO WATCH IT.

The movie was brilliant, with a few bits and pieces of art film-like cinematography. Great story, loved the twists of fate. And then, I watched “the scene”. As I sat there trying not to notice my sister’s pathetic attempts at hiding her tears, I tried to feel the scene, I tried to absorb the actor’s feelings... but in the end, there’s just something that kept my heartstrings from being tugged. I even watched that particular scene twice, just to make sure; alas, to no avail.

Is it the movie? There might be something wrong with the transition. Is it the actors? Josh was perfect (we’re close *wink*) and even the actress who played Helen of Troy in “Troy” wasn’t so bad. Is it because my heart is made of stone and I’ve finally reached the ultimate level of cynicism? Perhaps. Then again, backtracking to that second question, I remember this other character, Alex. She was the “villain”, the “freak-ass stalker bitch” who kept them apart. Why the quotation marks? Because she wasn’t really a villain... more like a victim of her unrequited love and longing for the lead character. And the actress, Rose Byrne, was absolutely stupendous in her role. One can’t help but pity and admire Alex... she did everything she could just for her happiness, but her actions ultimately led her to the attack of her conscience. In the end, she gave up going against fate and the movie showed the lead character’s happy ending while she, the poor girl, probably moved to another town.

I hate it when only the lead people get their share of happiness. Don’t other people deserve it too? It’s a classic case of unrequited love gone bad, dammit.

Haha, no wonder I can’t feel the last scene... I felt for Alex too much. It’s just so frustrating to see how the underdogs end up – or rather, to NOT see how they end up. Damn love. Even if it makes two people happy, it makes the rest of us look bad.

*sigh*

And that’s why I don’t think that using “The Scientist” in that scene is justified. Nasayang yung kanta.

P.S. Josh Hartnett crying – now that’s just: “SHET! NANDITO AKO JOOSSSHH!!! KALIMUTAN MO NA SIYAAAHHH!!!” :3
